| Tips:
Slice No More
Slicing occurs from a clubface that is too open at impact. Most often this fault lies in a golfer’s grip. To ensure that your grip is correct make sure the club is under the heel pad of the left hand and that the left thumb is on the right side of the shaft. The right palm line covers the left thumb and the first section of the right forefinger is on the back of the shaft, opposite the clubface. With the hands in this position the wrists will have a better chance of working properly. To check this hold the club out horizontally with the leading edge of the clubface pointing straight up with a flat left wrist and bend your right wrist as if to lift a hammer. This is your impact position of the hands and it should not have distrupted the clubface position with the leading edge pointing up. When you swing to the top of the backswing, the clubface should be parallel with the back of the left hand and arm. Maintain this flat left and bent right wrist condition past impact. The ball might go left at first but with some practice your swing will self-correct and no more slice.
Lag for Power
Homer Kelley wrote, “clubhead lag is the secret of golf”. Basically, clubhead lag is a trailing condition of the clubhead to the hands. The lag pressure is sensed on the right forefinger as the club resists the change of direction in the swing. Sustaining this lag pressure past impact can produce amazing power if your pivot is constant, steady and dynamic.
It sometimes helps to feel as if the arms are being left at the top of the swing. This helps promote the pulling action of the pivot. This dragging of the club is what produces the sense of lag of the clubhead which in turn results in a great wallop.
